The Making of A Unicorn Inspired Doll

I made a doll.

Inspired by a Unicorn.

She is the prettiest unicorn doll I have ever seen!

Unicorn inspired doll

This beauty was a custom doll request that I was super excited to receive,  although getting her finished would prove to be a little more difficult than I would have thought. Just a few of the road blocks included starting her in the wrong skin tone, not finding the right yarn for her hair and trying to make the perfect unicorn horn! But in the end she turned out better than I could have ever imagined and the customer who happens to be a repeat customer was very pleased so that is all that really matters.

The request was for a curvy girl with soft pastel colors with a focus on pink. I had so many ideas go through my head and even had one of my best doll maker friends hand paint eyes because regular black eyes was not going to do her justice. So with yarn and hook in hand I got started but I honestly was not feeling inspired so I put her to the side and started working on other orders.

Full Figured Crochet Doll

I had chosen several different yarns as possibilities for hair and after sending a few suggestions over to the person who would be the new owner of this beauty we finally agreed on a beautiful soft plush yarn from Premiere Yarns called Gelato in the color way Strawberry, I thought that would be the inspiration I needed to get her done and so started working on her again, I finished her head and most of her body but I still was not feeling the magical unicorn vibe that I was expecting and time was winding down for me to get this beauty finished and sent to her forever home.

The customer was also getting anxious and had sent me a few messages about the progress of the doll it wasn’t until her last message explaining the importance of the doll that I felt the inspiration I needed to get her finished. Instead of setting her to the side, I picked up my hook and yarn and this time I said a prayer. I asked God to guide my hands and create exactly what the new owner would need; what was created in a matter of hours is more than a unicorn this beauty represents life and I am so honored that He chose me to create this awesome gift not just for someone I consider a customer but for someone who is truly my friend.

We both cried tears over this beauty and I will never be able to express in words what really went into creating her but I am happy to report that the doll arrived on a very important date for my friend and was exactly what she needed on that day!

May Scope A Day Challenge

So who’s ready for a challenge!

You are probably like what are you talking about Yolonda? If you are asking this question then you must not follow me on Periscope? And you should follow me on Periscope you can follow me at http://periscope.tv/yolondajordan

What is Periscope you ask, Periscope is a live streaming app that allows you to stream live video from your tablet or smartphone. Why should you be using Periscope? Well it’s fun but if you are an entrepreneur or have a business you would like to promote it is a great way to build the know like and trust factor pretty much instantly. Even if you are not using it for business it is still a great tool to use to share things with friends and family as well as hone in on your speaking skills.

The number one reason I hear why people don’t “go live” is because they don’t know what to talk about which is where this challenge comes in, I have created fun and easy daily prompts that you can use to scope everyday in May that’s right for the next 31 days you can go live!

So if you are interested in joining the challenge and receiving the prompts all you have to do is enter your information below and I will get it sent right over to you!

Pattern Review Friday ~ Bedtime Bella Lovey Blanket

So if you follow me on any of my social media like Instagram or Facebook then you have already seen what I am calling the most precious thing I have ever crocheted. But since it’s Friday I figured why not come do a full review of this pattern. I am taking a limited number of orders for the finished lovey blanket if interested you can order here.

Cost: $5.00 Pattern is by Whitney of Café Mocha Creations and you can find the pattern on Etsy.

Difficulty: I would consider this an advance beginner to intermediate. The stitches are not difficult you basically just need to know how to single crochet and double crochet, however you do have to understand a pattern repeat. Also because the head is done in the continuous round make sure you have your stitch markers available.

Why you will hook it: Ummm it’s the most precious thing ever! Seriously the color combinations for the lovey part are pretty much endless and you can change up the hairstyle on the doll head to give the lovey a whole new look.

Why you will frog it: If you are not good with the pattern repeat you may find it a little tricky to work up I had to frog back a couple of rows because I was crocheting in the wrong stitch, but once I got a hang of it, it worked up really fast and before I knew it, she was done.

How many hooks: 5 out of 5. It works up great, pattern is well written and the end result AMAZING!

I used Caron Cakes in Rainbow Sprinkles for the blanket part and Big Twist Premium in the color Gingerbread for the head and arms.

You can see my video review below.

The Making of Anika ~ Crochet Brown Doll

Meet Miss Anika.

Meet Miss Anika

Shout out to my Periscope tribe who helped name her. I think her name is perfect for her as it means “Grace and Favor”

Miss Anika is my second version of a “mini” doll. Anika stands approximately 13″ tall from top of head to bottom of her feet but with her head wrap she is about 15″ tall and only 6″ around her waist area.

Anika was created with a Nubian Queen in mind, and for my love of all things gold. I’m still working on my vision of a doll dipped in gold but for now this beauty will definitely slay.

Though she is little, she is fierce

Anika is wearing a beautiful gold metallic skirt and top as well as gold metallic shoes which are all removable. Her shades of black, brown and gold headwrap is perfectly secured around her one puff hairstyle and is not removable. Her gold hoop earrings and gold braid bracelet complete her look.

Anika is a one of a kind beauty that you can’t find anywhere else. She is hand crocheted with 100% cotton yarn in a chocolate brown skin tone, she has 12mm safety eyes and the most gorgeous faux lashes.

Although she is not meant for play she would be the perfect addition to any little girls room or for the doll collector who wants to show off this beauty!

Do you see those curves? This one is not for the babies!

Head Wrap Cuties ~ Brown Doll Collection

1st Doll in the Head Wrap Cutie Collection
1st Doll in the Head Wrap Cutie Collection

Introducing the first doll in the Head Wrap Cutie Collection. I was inspired by Shawn of Constant Covering you can find out more about her here, but the moment I saw her beautiful head wraps I just knew I had to create a doll with a head wrap. I found this scarf at the top of my closet and I just knew it would be the perfect head wrap for the doll and after a little trial and error I finally got it wrapped just right.

Getting the head wrap just right
Getting the head wrap just right

The yellow in the scarf/head wrap was jumping out at me so I decided to add a bright yellow cardigan. My intent was just to make this one, however after a trip to my local JoAnn’s I knew there would be a collection of these dolls in my future. Stay tuned as I already have one in a new shade of brown in the works and then of course I will do one in chocolate brown and light caramel as well. What do you think are you a fan of the head wrap? Btw the doll does have a full head of hair underneath so even when the head wrap is removed the doll still has her natural hair inspired hairstyle.
